It was a routine assignment, but the stakes couldn’t feel higher. Outside of the core game, there isn’t much to do here aside from customize your player’s looks and equipment. The unique and always deadly areas each chapter takes place in are handcrafted and relatively compact, rather than auto-generated nothings for me to grab 20 of one thing and 30 of another in before rolling the base off somewhere else. There are blockages to blast away with lasers, prime mining spots to uncover, cargo drops to retrieve, shortcuts to discover and mysterious phenomena to research—if I dare to spend a little time on them, that is.

South of Midnight delights with its looks and soundtrack, which is much better than anyone could expect. It’s a shame, though, that aesthetic experience isn’t followed by equally great gameplay. Blades of Fire stands out with its engaging combat system and weapon customization.

If we call a game Amazing, that means something about it seriously impressed us, whether it’s an inspired new idea or an exceptional take on an old one. We expect to look back at it as one of the highlights of its time and genre. 2022 had the potential to be the biggest year for new video games since 2017 — a standout year that brought us Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Resident Evil 7, Assassin’s Creed Origins, and so much more.

Monster Train 2 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but as far as roguelike deckbuilders go it’s one of the best available.
