Throughout the first half, I was mixing in a fair few side missions and activities with the main quests to make sure I was still looking after the city I couldn’t stop swinging around in. But, as I steadily began to realise the repetitive nature of the open-world tasks I was being asked to perform, combined with the ever-rising tensions of the plot, I made the decision to mainline it from about the halfway point onwards. Spider-Man 2 is now available on both PC and PS5, and with two Spider-Men, an expanded New York and a whole host of villains to contend with, you might expect some extended web-swinging action this time round.

Of course, Insomniac could’ve scrapped the entire wall due to their plans to keep Alexei alive, but if it was scrapped primarily due to design reasons, then Rhino could truly have been killed by Kraven the Hunter. After all, it makes sense for Kraven to hunt Rhino as he is much more akin to Kraven’s desire to hunt “beasts.” Despite many fans banding together and begging Insomniac to redo the famous scene in which Symbiote Spider-Man yells at Shocker when chasing him down (“Get back here Shocker!”).

The team has landed a trilogy of games that all stand strong on their own merits but unite into a sweeping saga made better by experiencing its entirety. While more Spider-Man games will inevitably expand this mythology in new directions, there’s no need to wait. With Spider- Man 2, the developer has found what makes superhero stories worth telling (and retelling) and given its likable heroes the journey they deserve. But bells and whistles aside, what makes the game so special — even among other Spider-media — is its ability to let players relish the minutiae.
