On one of the monitors in the Labo area is an image of a CD-ROM and a DVD. DVDs meanwhile aided the PS2 because its DVD drive meant that it could play DVD movies, an incredibly popular format for watching films at the time. These aspects don’t fundamentally change how Astro’s Playroom plays. But they make those moments you’ve experienced before feel more interesting and immersive. It didn’t change the core of the game, but it made the overall experience better. Astro’s Playroom could easily have been a simple tech demo, and in a way it is that. Its main function is to demonstrate the possibilities of the DualSense.

SSD Speedway is the second zone in the game, whose Artefacts cover the PlayStation 2 from 2001 to 2006. TR88 is the Rocket Suit, which you control with the Adaptive Triggers and the SIXAXIS tilt controls. Memory Meadow is chronologically the first zone in the game, with Artefacts covering the original PlayStation era from 1995 to 2000.

Astro’s Playroom All Collectible Locations (artefacts & Puzzle Pieces)

Each level is split into four key areas, two of which are reliant on a feature of the DualSense, all are mandatory to complete the levels. As soon as I encountered the first of these, I knew I would have serious issues with this game when it comes to my disability. I opted to enter Memory Meadow first, a charming area with fields aplenty. The mandatory interaction area in this level required the use of the touchpad, namely to flick repeatedly in the direction you wish to travel to move the ball.

At the very end of the level, check the left-hand side of the CRT pile to find two dancing cats in front of a PocketStation. These reference Doko Demo Issyo, released for the device in 1999 only in Japan, and developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It’s most famous for starring Toro Inoue, also known as the Sony Cat, who wishes to become human. At the end of the short side-path to the Multi-Tap, you’ll spot a Bot with a flashlight stalked by a Bot in a straw hat. This references 2003’s Siren on PS3, developed by SCE Japan Studio. In 2016, Siren was ported to the PlayStation 4 with added Trophy support.

Gold trophies are the most demanding, often requiring near-perfect execution or the completion of particularly obscure objectives. Finally, the Platinum trophy, “You’ve Only Done Everything,” is the ultimate reward, earned by unlocking all other trophies in the game. In addition to the base game trophies, there are DLC trophies that offer additional challenges. Beyond its nostalgic charm, Astro’s Playroom offers a rewarding trophy-hunting experience.
