[newline]While magic users and some melee builds will be able to play a bit more aggressively, Demon’s Souls just isn’t designed to support that more active style of combat that has defined modern Soulslike games. This entry may seem like the most obvious improvement, but it shouldn’t be overlooked.

It had respect, to be sure, garnered through cult classic series like Armored Core and King’s Field, but these were far from the unstoppable cultural forces of something like Dark Souls. FromSoftware even suffered a handful of botched projects and flops like Ninja Blade—something that seems inconceivable in 2025, considering the company’s winning streak. But Demon’s Souls drastically transformed FromSoftware’s reputation and design philosophy, introducing the world to Hidetaka Miyazaki as a game director. It’s small by Elden Ring standards, but worth experiencing firsthand nevertheless. Demon’s Souls is a full proper remake of the first Souls game.

The Clever Rat’s Ring can be used to increase the weapon’s damage while the player’s HP is low. Get ready for one of the best early strength-based weapons in the game. The Crushing Battle Axe is a real damage dealer and can really help take down demons. The regular Battle Axe is dropped by the Boleteria Soldiers, but the real prize is the Battle Axe found in the Stonefang Tunnels.

Specifically, you need to defeat here while she is still in her human form, which can be done when the World Tendency is Pure White. This medium armor set can be worn by any character type, and changes its appearance slightly depending on your character’s build. A truly unique armor set in Demon’s Souls, the Binded Cross armor set looks a bit rough, but certainly comes with a specific vibe, as well as some protection from various types of damage.

For those who haven’t played Demon’s Souls since 2009, or even those who haven’t played the remake since its 2020 launch, there’s plenty of value in delving back into Boletaria. After playing something like Elden Ring, it’s fascinating to revisit modern FromSoftware’s roots, seeing the impetus for its one-of-a-kind design philosophy with the benefit of hindsight. For anyone interested in gaming history, Demon’s Souls is required reading, and a single playthrough isn’t enough to extract all its mechanical depth. Moreover, it’s novel and almost surreal to see what FromSoftware cooked up in 2009, and how its approach to game-making has evolved since then. Priests start with a mace which is good, but what is even better is the Blessed Mace.

With all that in mind, it’s wonderful that Bluepoint Games mostly ignored all of the newer Souls games and thoroughly nailed this remake of Demon’s Souls. Showing that From Software has to finally pull its socks up and make something new for a change. For those interested, I have a long and storied history with From Software’s various games over the years. Having played and finished every Armored Core game to date, thrashed the various Another Century’s Episode games and rinsed the likes of Metal Wolf Chaos.

The Demon’s Souls remake features the brutal challenge that FromSoftware titles are known for, but knowing what the best weapons are can make the game more manageable. Released in 2009, Demon’s Souls – the first entry in the so-called Soulsborne RPG subgenre – raised the bar for in-game equipment design. With 2020’s remake, a new generation of players can take up arms against the enemies that rove through the Kingdom of Boletaria. Whenever I felt that Demon’s Souls could have done more, though, I remembered the Old Monk boss fight. See, the Old Monk is a unique boss in Demon’s Souls which can actually be controlled by another player if they invade your world at the right time. It’s a brilliant use of the series’ PvP mechanics that has been incredibly difficult to properly experience in the years since Demon’s Souls‘ official servers went offline.

Demon’s Souls Remake Guide

Although this weapon won’t deal nearly as much damage as others on this list, it boasts some of the most customization options in the game. For example, you could turn the Knight Sword into a Dragon Knight Sword for Fire damage or a Crushing Knight Sword to guarantee an S Rank of Strength scaling damage. Any build can use this weapon with minimal stat requirements, which can be something that holds builds back during the early game.

With a strength requirement of 30 and B damage scaling in that stat, it’s an excellent mid-to-late game weapon for Strength builds. Ironically enough, it’s not all that useful against the Dragon God due to the puzzle-like design of the fight. 777X isn’t well-suited for all builds, but it’s a must-have for anyone focusing on magic. The weapon scales very well with your Magic stat, and it allows you to passively regenerate mana while it is equipped. This extra ability is great if you are looking to use spells often either to get through an area or take down a difficult boss weak to magic damage.
